GREAT BRAIN-BOOSTING ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS
May 30, 2017
One of the most important aspects of elder care is keeping the patient’s mind active and engaged. The brain is a muscle, and just like the rest of our muscles, it needs to be exercised regularly to help it stay strong. This can be especially true for senior patients. That’s because as we get older, our ability to participate in many of the brain-engaging activities that we used to enjoy might diminish. Introducing new activities that suit the patient’s abilities and engage their interest is an important job for a caregiver!
Are you looking for activity ideas that can help seniors exercise their mental skills? Our elder care team in Indianapolis has a few suggestions to get you started!
Exercise Their Brain With These Activities!
- Jigsaw Puzzles. Encourage seniors to join a puzzle trading group. They’ll each sign their name and the date they finished the puzzle on the lid, and then pass it along to the next person. It’s a great way to get a lot of puzzles without spending a lot of money.
- Crossword Puzzles. The best part about crossword puzzles is that they are daily and can arrive right on your doorstep!
- Mobile Games. Don’t discount a senior’s ability to use a mobile device! Tablets are ideal for seniors because of their big screen size. Show them how to download a few games and let them explore.
- Writing Letters. Encourage them to find a pen pal, whether it’s a relative or another senior nearby. If they can’t write letters due to poor eyesight or arthritis, encourage them to record messages and stories from their life to share.
- Card Games. This is a great activity because it can be social, too. Look for community bridge groups or start your own card playing club.
- Painting. Painting, drawing, and other artistic pursuits are a great way to exercise the brain. They can sign up for a class at their local community center to get started or watch some videos on YouTube for beginner lessons.
- Playing Music. Music is great for the brain! Encourage them to take up an instrument they’ve always wanted to learn. They may be able to find a local class or hire a private tutor.
- Crafting. This is a great way to introduce a new hobby that can keep them busy. Woodworking, knitting, needle felting, embroidery…the crafting options are endless and there is something for everyone.
- Video Games. It’s not far fetched! Many seniors are falling in love with video games and they actually benefit the brain by making seniors think in new ways and solve puzzles. Physical games get them up and moving, too.
- Reading. A good old fashioned book never hurt, either! Whether it’s non-fiction or a sweet romance, reading is a great way to keep the brain strong.
